Bajaj Pulsar 135

                                Bajaj Pulsar 135

Overview

Bajaj Pulsar 135 LS is the latest bike to join the Pulsar range, it features a 135cc DTS-i 4-valve engine. Bajaj Pulsar 135 LS features the same headlight as seen in the XCD Sprint Concept shown at the Auto Expo, 2008 in New Delhi. Bajaj Auto has refreshed the Pulsar 135 LS with rear tyre hugger in place of the full rear wheel mud guard and the addition of O-ring chain with half chain covers. The O-ring chain is less on maintenance with higher resistance to moisture and dust. Like the elder siblings of Pulsar, Bajaj Auto has given the Speed line treatment to the Pulsar 135. It is now available in blue, red and black with speed line treatment. So does this bike stand out from the crowd?

Bajaj Pulsar 135 LS Design and Style

The bike’s style has been fully refreshed and updated with a few welcome additions that help to make it a good-looking motorcycle. The 135 LS's rear tyre hugger replaces the rear wheel full-size mudguard that was previously installed. Bajaj have also added an O-ring chain plus half-chain covers, which requires less maintenance and is better able to resist dust and moisture. The speed lines found on the sibling models released by Bajaj also appear on the 135 LS. The fuel tank’s design closely mirrors that shown on the concept model of the XCD Sprint, as do the bike’s newly designed air scoops and alloy wheels, finished in black matte coating. The headlamp, LED tail light, split seat, grab rails, high-stance rear and mud guard have all been refined and updated to give the bike an athletic, speedy look that will appeal to young drivers – and its lack of bulk also helps. Weighing in at 122kg, it’s far from the heavy end of the segment.

Instrument Console of Bajaj Pulsar 135 LS

The bike’s instrument console has also been revamped and updated, and is now a digital display – which many drivers will welcome for the increased usability and visibility of the controls. It includes an odometer, fuel level monitor, neutral blinker, self-cancelling indicators and a low-battery meter.

Engine of Bajaj Pulsar 135 LS

According to Bajaj the 135cc DTS-i engine in Pulsar 135 LS is the world's first DTS-i engine to feature 4 valves. This engine generated maximum power of 13.3 Bhp at 9000 rpm with maximum torque of 11.4 Nm at 7500 rpm. It has been designed for better performance than regular a 2-Valve engine. Combined with the revolutionary DTS-i (Digital Twin Spark-ignition) technology which maximizes combustion to deliver enhanced power and superior mileage with low emissions, the Pulsar 135 LS has one of the most efficient production engines ever.

Acceleration and Top Speed

The bike’s four valves are smaller and more lightweight, enabling the bike to achieve higher revs with less effort – and the result is that it can hit an impressive 10,500 rpm. The bike’s TRICS-3 and Intelligent CDI systems give vastly improved ignition timing at a range of engine RPMs, giving a smoother transmission of power. The bike’s patented ExhausTEC technology (Torque Expansion Chamber) gives higher pickup at lower rpms, removing the need to shift gears frequently as you accelerate. Even with heavy loads, the bike feels fast. It can make the jump from 0 to 60 kmph in 5.1 seconds, which is respectable for a 135cc engine, but unsurprising given its superior weight to power ratio: 110.7 Ps per ton. It has a top speed of 120 kmph.

Bajaj Pulsar 135 LS Mileage

The bike’s fuel economy is claimed to be among the best offered by any bike on the market, thanks to the DTSi system coupled with the four-valve setup. On average, the bike will manage 68.1 km per litre, as certified by the ARAI – a very impressive figure, but unsurprising given the effort devoted to making the bike as light and as powerful as possible. Bajaj claim that the Pulsar 135LS has one of the most efficient production engines of any performance motorcycle, which would certainly make it an appealing prospect for many young drivers who don’t have a lot of money to throw around. The fuel tank is capable of holding 8 litres.

Comfort While Driving Bajaj Pulsar 135 LS

The Pulsar 135 is comfortable enough, as long as you don’t plan to ride it for hours – the seat is a little too unyielding and uncomfortable for longer trips. However, the updated grab rail is undeniably more convenient, and some thought has gone into making the seat more ergonomically friendly.

Safety Features

The bike’s bright and powerful headlight is the same as that shown on the XCD Sprint concept model that was demonstrated at 2008’s New Delhi Auto Expo. It includes twin pilot lamps powered on a DC circuit that ensures a constant and powerful beam of light at all speeds of travel.

Suspension and Brakes

Bajaj bikes are usually well fitted with capable suspension suited to the city environment, and this motorcycle is no exception. Its telescopic front-fork suspension, featuring anti-friction bushes, and nitrox-assisted triple-rated spring rear suspension, provide good riding comfort, absorbing most shocks from potholes and bumpy surfaces – but take the bike off-road and the driving experience is pretty unpleasant, with plenty of feedback to the handlebar.
The bike’s 240mm front disc brake with full ventilation enables it to brake quickly and safely, even from top speeds. The bike’s brakes always feel controlled and stable, even when conditions are wet or when running on slippery roads. It also features a standard 130 mm drum brake at the rear.

Ride and Handling

One of the Pulsar’s best features is its handling: it’s undoubtedly one of the nimblest and most sporty bikes Bajaj has yet released. It corners very well, remaining stable at all times, and it feels light, able to pass through narrow spaces in tight traffic

Tyre Size

The bike boasts six-spoke alloy wheels. The front wheel is a 2.75 x 17”, and the rear is a 100/90 x 17”. The bike’s tubeless tyres are generally strong and sturdy, coping well with wet and dry conditions.

Shades

Bajaj Pulsar 135 LS is available in three speed line shades: Cocktail Wine Red, Midnight Black and Plasma Blue.

Variants

The Pulsar 135 comes in a single standard variant.

Distinctive Features of Bajaj Pulsar 135 LS

The bike’s clip-on handlebar features a pass switch, engine kill switch and electric jump-start mechanism. The bike also features a maintenance free battery, meaning that you won’t have to pay to get the battery serviced along with the other parts.

Reasons to Buy and Value for Money

The bike is powerful, slickly designed and comfortable to ride, with great fuel economy and some nice additional extras. The bike’s excellent specs and strong performance mean that it represents excellent value for money, particularly due to its outstanding fuel economy, which will help to keep running costs low. This bike is a worthy addition to Bajaj’s updated line, thanks to its high-performance engine and great looks.

Competition
TVS Phoenix will face steep competition from Yamaha Galdiator which is another commuter from Yamaha, Honda stunner and Hero Motocorp Glamour this motorcycles also has similar features and same amount of power delivery and all of them falls under the commuter segment of motorcycles.
Conclusion
TVS Phoenix
India has recently seen lots of motorcycles in the commuter segment TVS Phoenix is also one of them, this motorcycle has a smooth engine and many premium features but still somewhere it lags the premium feel. TVS claimed that the motorcycle will return 67 km to a litre it will show its real characteristics when it will be put to real test. TVS Motors, India’s third largest two wheeler manufacturing company has showcased a new full fairing version of their flagship model Apache RTR in Indonesia. In India TVS till now has introduced the RTR 160 EFi (Fuel Injection), RTR 160 RD (Rear Disc), RTR 180 and the latest RTR 180 ABS. The manufacturer now is about to upgrade their 160cc RTR which is expected to be showcased at the Auto Expo to be held in Delhi in January 2012.
TVS Motors post their break up with Suzuki found it hard to match the other manufacturers in the market. With few motorcycles in their portfolio they could not get hold of the urban market while their competitor Bajaj was selling Pulsar in big volumes. It was only the Apache 150cc which helped TVS to make its presence in the 150cc segment. Later on TVS upgraded their 150cc Apache into a 160cc Apache RTR (Race Throttle Response) which did well with its strong pick up and racing design language.
Meanwhile, TVS has showcased a full faring model of the Apache in Indonesia and the bike when launched in India will compete with the Yamaha R15. The full fairing gives the bike a sporty look which only the Yamaha R15 offers in this segment. There are thicker tyres and better braking. Though there is no news about the engine capacity or the power output but if this bike comes to India it will surely create ripples in the market.

We listened very closely to the needs of highway cruisers in India and covered improvements on a variety of fronts – range, ergonomics, looks, braking, night riding visibility, luggage carriage capability, even clothing and accessories. We hope also that our customers will see this as a firm affirmation of the fact that Royal Enfield is a company bent on listening, imagining and delivering. We invite everyone coming to Pragati Maidan this January to visit us and experience the oldest motorcycle company in the world.”
The visual appeal of the Thunderbird 500 is marked by the ‘black’ engine, the first of the several styling elements that characterize the motorcycle. The seat has been completely redesigned to suit the new foot pegs position. It now opens using a lock mechanism, accessible through the side panel. True to its design concept as a more “touring friendly” motorcycle, the separately mounted pillion seat can be removed to accommodate luggage. The handle bar too has received changes for better reach and ergonomics. The pillion grab rail is an all new pressure die cast component and lends to the modern design of the motorcycle. Bungee hooks provide the much needed bungee points to tie
luggage. Other small styling elements that a keen enthusiast will notice include the Royal Enfield logo on the all new foot-pegs, new design mirrors and the LED tail lamp.
The redesigned front end with its 41mm thick forks greatly improves handling besides adding to the muscularity of the Thunderbird 500. The instrumentation also includes two digital trip meters, allowing riders to keep a track of total trip mileage as well as i ntermediate mileage between tankfulls. The speed and engine rpm are shown via tastefully designed analogue clocks, housed in all new twin pods at the front. The main ignition lock also functions as a central steering lock. The inclusion of hazard lamps in the switch gear is a first for a motorcycle manufactured in India.
The new headlight with a 55W projector lamp for its low beam and a 55W halogen bulb for the high beam, addresses the biggest challenge of night time visibility faced by most motorcyclists while cruising on the highway. The lighting is at its brightest with the high beam on, working in combination with the projector lamp giving ample spread and penetration on the road. The high rise handlebars, forward placed foot-pegs and a low seat height enable a rider to cover distances comfortably for longer periods of time. Add to this, the large 20L fuel tank that does away with the need to stop frequently for fuel- highway cruising will no longer be the same! The tank cap is placed asymmetrically on the top right hand side of the tank, instead of the conventional central mounting; another distinctive styling element of the Thunderbird 500.
To complete the package, s topping power has been aided with the addition of a disc brake at the rear. The braking system is supplied by Bybre, a fully owned subsidiary of Brembo. It is mounted on the new improved oval section swing arm.
Royal Enfield also previewed a range of well crafted, meticulously detailed, purpose built motorcycle gear at the Auto Expo. Designed and developed indigenously, the Royal Enfield accessories both add flair and enhance the riding experience. On display is the inaugural “BLACK” range of merchandise, celebrating the launch of the Thunderbird 500 . The collection includes biker apparel, bike and riding accessories.
The highlights include flagship leather riding jackets with design details that take into account not just the rider’s comfort but also safety with CE approved impact absorption protectors that pass the stringent European norms of EN1621. In addition, there is ample usage of 3M Scotchlite reflective piping and branding at the back with Schoeller reflective for high visibility during night rides . The all weather high density nylon riding jacket wi th breathable and waterproof membrane provides rain proofing, while the removable thermal lining takes care of cold weather riding and nylon mesh on the outer shell keeps the rider cool during summer rides. Similar features are also on the riding pants with hip protectors adding to the rider’s safety. Also showcased are CE approved Modular eye wear with ‘anti fog’ treatment and 100% genuine UV protection and many added features for riding, in association with NANNINI from Italy, original Buff multipurpose headwear with safety reflectors from Spain, motorcycle utility luggage system with interlocking mechanism, back packs with EVA high density back support and state of the art air bag cushioning for the first time in India.
The Royal Enfield riding gear also includes motorcycle boots with dual lacing and zipper puller and heavy duty oil and water repellant sol es for sure grip on the tarmac, while head protection in association with world renowned AGV helmets adds to the style quotient. Fashionable protective
riding pants, for the first time in Indian motorcycling history, made from high abrasion resistant
Toughmax denim with T400 lycra from Invista with removable CE protectors at hip and knees makes riding a breeze. In addition, Royal Enfield tee shirts , logo pin badges, key chains, motorcycle clocks, leather riding gloves with carbon fiber knuckles are also previewed.

Design

Royal Enfield Classic Desert Storm
The Desert Storm looks different from other cruisers on Indian roads, The motorcycle has a matte sand color paint coat which looks incredible. The front round headlamps and the pilot lamps looks classy on the motorcycle, but there is no option of projector headlamps like the new Thunderbird 500, which is the latest offering from Royal Enfield. The instrument cluster which has been fitted with the headlamp cluster of the motorcycle consists of an analogue speedometer, fuel indicator beside the regular warning lamps but the modern instrumentation panel is missing on this motorcycle. The front telescopic suspension with metal encasing will definitely attract lots of attention beside providing a much smoother ride. The side profile of the motorcycle is also equally attractive like its front, The fuel tank look stylish with the thigh pad placed in the tank adds to the vintage look of the motorcycle, the single saddle on the motorcycle has been fitted with stiffer springs for the maximum comfort of the rider. The exhaust looks classy on the new Desert Storm and helps in maintaining the old charm on the motorcycle.
The rear of the motorcycle has a smooth flowing mudguard that leads all the way to the rear tail lamps; the rear exhaust occupies a large section and promises a smooth ride in any terrain. The wide 120/80 rear tyres looks bold in the motorcycle. The fit and finish and the quality of materials has improved than its predecessors but still there are some issues which exists with the overall quality of materials of the motorcycle, but the Desert Storm looks classy and attractive.

Engine and performance

Royal Enfield Classic Desert Storm
The engine that powers the Desert storm is the same unit that powers the Thunderbird 500. The Desert storm is powered by a Single-cylinder, air-cooled, four-stroke, 499cc engine which generates 27.2bhp of maximum power at 5250rpm and 4.2kgm of torque at 4000rpm. There is an electric start for the motorcycle, the sound is the same old thump that is recognizable from a long distance.
The engine is pretty smooth and is ideal for cruising; this motorcycle is a cruiser so there is no meaning of pushing the motorcycle hard to extract the best performance out of it. The gear pattern for the Desert storm is one-down, four-up and the gears are pretty smooth and requires less effort for shifting, the Desert storm can be ridden at high speeds and the high speed stability is excellent in the motorcycle and the engine also does not feels stressed out. But when it is pushed hard there is lot of vibration that can be felt from the handlebars.
Overall the engine performance is descent and there is enough power with the twist of a throttle which will leave a smile on the face of the rider.

Ride and handling

Royal Enfield Classic Desert Storm
The Desert Storm has been built around a single-downtube, heavy tubular steel frame and weighs about 187kg, the massive weight of the motorcycle can be a bit of a problem for the riders when they will be riding in the city traffic, but once it finds the open road the beast can be tamed easily. The rider seating position is upright and is not at all stressful for long journeys the sprung seats is an innovative idea by Royal Enfield. The Telescopic, 35mm forks, 130mm travel front forks and the twin gas charged shock absorbers with 5-step adjustable preload, 80mm travel suspension at the rear works wonders for the Desert Storm and they handle the Indian roads and rough terrains quite efficiently.
The Desert storm has been fitted with 19 inch front wheels and 18 inch wheels at the rear which gives the motorcycle stability. The rubbers that has been provided in the desert storm also offers tremendous amount of grip on the tarmac, the wide 120/80 section tyre increases the confidence of the rider. Now coming to the braking poart of the motorcycle, the big 280mm disc at the front and 153mm disc at the rear are quite capable of bringing the heavy motorcycle to a halt. Overall the motorcycle is ideal for long rides and open roads, the heavy weight of the motorcycle can hamper the handling for the riders in city traffics.

Pricing

The Royal Enfield Desert storm has been priced at RS.Rs 1.58-1.65 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai)

Competition

There is no such competitor for the Royal Enfield in this segment; the iconic motorcycle brand faces little competition from the Thunderbird 500 which is also another motorcycle from their stable. The Thunderbird 500 is a modern avatar of the Royal Enfield and has many new design features and elements which will definitely attract lots of attention towards the motorcycle, but if someone wants a unique old school designed motorcycle then the Desert storm is the ideal motorcycle for them.

Conclusion

Royal Enfield Classic Desert Storm
Keeping in mind the customers and their needs Royal Enfield has improved all their products with passing time. The desert Storm is a reliable motorcycle but there are certain things that comes in the way of Desert storm being called the perfect machine on the Indian road today, the chrome metal parts rusts easily so the question still arises about the fit and finish quality of the motorcycle, the engine vibration is another issue when the motorcycle is pushed hard. Beside these the retro look and the thumping noise will definitely attract lots of attention towards this motorcycle for sure.
