2012 Bajaj Pulsar 200NS

bajaj pulsar 200ns picture

Bajaj is all set to re-write the rules of the Indian performance motorcycle segment with the 2012 Pulsar 200NS that is scheduled to go on sale in April 2012 at around the Rs 75,000 mark. The 200cc liquid-cooled engine develops 23.5PS of power, enough to lend the bike sizzling performance that will complement the sporty, modern and racy design language. The Pulsar 200NS will also pave the way for future Pulsar models that will be sold in various engine configurations.

Design

Bajaj Pulsar 200NS
First look at the Pulsar 200NS and you are bound to get bikes like the Yamaha FZ-16 and the Honda CBR1000R into the picture. Clearly, the designers have picked up cues from these bikes and fused their best design elements into one and the end product does look awfully sporty, modern and very racy! It should be noted that ex-BMW design head Edgar Heinrich was part of the team that designed this machine. The Pulsar 200NS carries on the naked sports legacy that the brand started a decade back and how! The original tank is now sharper and runs down to the radiator shroud. There is no sticker work, but pure creases and prominent design lines which adds to aggression to the whole visual appeal.
Bajaj Pulsar 200NS
The Darth Vader headlamp gets your attention up front along with the wide 100mm front tyre and sharply cut front mud-guard. See the Pulsar 200NS from the rear three quarter and you are bound to be impressed even more. Bajaj has left no stones un-turned as far as design goes and the clutter less and raised rear part simply adds to the oomph factor. The 130mm wide tyre and the under-belly exhaust along with the petal discs complete the package here.

Engine

Bajaj Pulsar 200NS
Complementing the sporty design of the Pulsar 200NS is the 199.5cc four-stroke engine that has clearly been designed and tuned for performance. The bottom end of this engine and parts like crankshaft, connecting rod and piston etc are shared with the Duke 200 but the rest of the unit is different. The Pulsar 200NS also makes use of a (surprisingly) carburettor and technology flows in in the form of three spark plugs (up from two on the earlier models), four valves and liquid cooling. The engine, producing a very impressing 23.5PS of power at 9500rpm, is mated to a 6-speed transmission. Maximum torque stands at 18.3Nm at 8000rpm.
Bajaj claims that per the IDC norms, the Pulsar 200NS fuel economy stands at 54kmpl. Expect a top speed of around 130-135km/h along with a sub 9 second timing for the 0-100km/h sprint.

Price

Bajaj Pulsar 200NS
The official launch of the 2012 Bajaj Pulsar 200NS is slated in the first week of April, ie, in the next financial year. While Bajaj hasn’t disclosed by price band in which the 200NS will be pitted, we assume this all-new and sportiest bike from the manufacturer ever will carry a price tag in the range of Rs 75,000 to Rs 80,000 making it shattering value for money, a trait that Bajaj has always been known for!
This kind of money gets you a technology superior Indian performance bike that looks hot as hell!

Competition

Bajaj Pulsar 200NS
The 2012 Bajaj Pulsar 200NS will face competition from half a dozen other bikes in India including its own cousin, the 2012 KTM Duke 200. Other rivals include the Hero MotoCorp Karizma, TVS Apache RTR180 and to an extent, Honda’s CBR250R. However, we shall reserve our judgment till the official prices are out

            2011 Yamaha R15 version 0

yamaha r15 version 2.0 picture

Yamaha set a new example with the launch of their most anticipated sporty motorcycle the R15 in the year 2008, the motorcycle was an instant hit in India, there were no other motorcycle in the Indian market which could match the technology and performance of this sportsbike from Yamaha. However after 3 year of its launch it was time for Yamaha to bring the updated version of the R15 in the Indian market, so in the year 2011 Yamaha launched the newer and meaner version of the Yamaha R15 and christened it as R15 version 2.0. The Motorcycle looks like a proper racing machine and has the DNA of a sportsbike in it, the R15 can also be called the baby R1. The R15 version 2.0 has the looks and performances which will definitely attract everyone’s attention.
The R15 version 2.0 is powered by a 149.8 cc Liquid-cooled 4-stroke engine which generates 17 PS of maximum power at 8,500 RPM and 15 Nm of torque at 7,500 RPM, the engine has been mated with a 6 speed gearbox. There are lots of interesting features about this motorcycle, Let’s find out in details about them.

Design

Yamaha R15 version 2.0
The R15 version 2.0 is an unique looking motorcycle in the Indian market. The front of the Version 2.0 remains almost same as the R15, it has duel headlamps in the front which almost looks like the bigger Yamaha R1 and is the signature styling of the R1 family. The major changes that has been made in the motorcycle starts from the mid section of the motorcycle, the mid-fairing has been tweaked to give it a more meaner and muscular appearance , the advantage to that is the aerodynamics of the Version 2.0 is improved by almost 4% which also has made its mark in its performance. A new mock carbon fiber side panel has been added which almost stretches to the rear seat and looks stylish and adds to the sporty elements of the motorcycle.
The new rear seats looks more aggressive and now and has a separate section for both front and the pillion rider, it also has slip resistant seat cover for the safety of the rider, although the pillion might face problems seating at the back. Version 2.0 has been fitted with a brand new more aggressively angled exhaust which looks sporty and stylish, it also has a new sculpted cover with mock carbon fiber finish to it and the R15 embossed metal plate has been attached which looks good on the exhaust. The rear tail section has also been angled aggressively and the rear tail light now has an LED unit which looks almost like the Yamaha’s very own R6. An alloy frame also has been fitted at the rear which holds the number plate along with the side turn indicators of the motorcycle, but there is no rear handle grab bar which adds to the disadvantage. Another major change that the motorcycle received are the tyres, the new Version 2.0 has been fitted with wider tyres at the rear which enhanced the overall looks of the motorcycle but hampers its performance part by little margin. The front section now has a more wider tyre than its predecessor. Overall the Version 2.0 is almost a new motorcycle and looks meaner and sportier than the older version for sure.
The overall dimension of the R15 version 2.0 is given below:
Length1970mm
Width670mm
Height1070mm
Wheelbase1345mm

Engine and performance

Yamaha R15 version 2.0
The engine remains the same as it was in the previous version of the R1, the version 2.0 is powered by the same 149.8 cc Liquid-cooled 4-stroke engine which generates 17 PS of maximum power at 8,500 RPM and 15 Nm of torque at 7,500 RPM, the engine has been mated with a 6 speed gearbox.
The new R15 version 2.0 is 5 kg heavier than the older R15 but it is powered by the same engine so that can certainly raise a question that has the performance been degraded in the Version 2.0? and the answer to that is No the performance has increased by a little margin in the new R15 version 2.0 and this was possible because of the recalibrated E.C.U and tweaked gearing. The R15 version 2.0 is faster than the old R15 by a little margin. The R15 version 2.0 is a sports bike and the best place for riding this motorcycle is open highways but it does perform well in the city traffic too.

Ride and handling

Yamaha R15 version 2.0
The motorcycle is a good handler both in the straight as well as winding roads. The Motorcycle and the good tyres gives the rider confidence in leaning into corners, this motorcycle has got the racing DNA of Yamaha and thus have racing spirit in it. The motorcycles uses telescopic suspension at the front and mono-cross suspension at the rear which is capable enough to handle Indian roads exceptionally well.
The braking hardware also has improved than its previous version, the rear now gets a 220mm bigger disc brakes and the front wheel has been fitted with hydraulic disc brakes which provides excellent braking power to this mean machine. The motorcycle has stronger torque at lower revs which is a good news for many Indians because most of the people can ride this machine in city traffic also, Yamaha’s Delta box frame gives the R15 an edge over other motorcycles of its class, the new and improved tyres also does its job pretty well by sticking to the tarmac.

Pricing

The R15 version 2.0 is priced at RS.1,10,750 (Ex showroom Delhi).
The R15 version 2.0 is available with following color options:
- Invincible Black
- Raring red
- Thundering Green
- Racing Blue

Competition

The R15 version 2.0 faces tough competition from the
Pulsar 180
Although the Bajaj Pulsar 180 is powered by a 178.6 cc engine it generates the same amount of power that the R15 generates, the Pulsar generates 17.02 PS of maximum power at 8500 rpm and 14.22 NM of maximum torque at 6500rpm. The R15 version 2.0 has more racing features than the Pulsar 180 DTSi.

Conclusion

Yamaha R15 version 2.0
Yamaha R15 version 2.0 is more meaner, stylish and the performance level has also increased by a fair margin, the new and improved motorcycle will certainly attract the attention of young generation of India for sure and with that pricing they can afford a racing motorcycle for themselves which is meant for both the track as well the roads.

Press Release

Yamaha R15 version 2.0
Cementing its foothold in the premium segment, India Yamaha Motor today launched the YZF-R15 version 2.0 – a 150cc liquid-cooled 4-stroke fuel injected bike. The YZF-R15 version 2.0 is a new model that has been developed under the concept of a “Graded Up R15.” While maintaining the proven ease of handling of the existing R15, the R15 version 2.0 boasts of spruced up looks and better performance in circuit riding. The design elements are borrowed from the supersport model YZF-R1 that is adapted from YZR-M1 MotoGP race machine. The new bike is priced at Rs. 1,07,000 (Ex-showroom, Delhi) and will be available in Racing Blue, Midnight Black & Sunset Red colors.
The R15 version 2.0 has undergone changes as compared to the present YZF-R15 in the specs of the Engine Control unit (ECU), drivetrain unit, a long aluminum swing arm, wider front and rear tires (radial tire for the rear), split seat, LED taillights and new-design middle cowl & tail cowl.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Hiroyuki Suzuki, CEO & Managing Director, India Yamaha Motor, said, “Having witnessed the tremendous fan following received by the existing YZF-R15, we are very excited about the launch of the YZF-R15 version 2.0 which promises to deliver greater performance and enhanced features. Seeing the trend, the market for premium bikes in India offers immense scope as this segment consists of people who are looking for performance characteristics.”
“The YZF-R15 version 2.0 is an upgraded version of our flagship bike YZF-R15 and is designed keeping in mind the comfort as well as the thrill of a sports ride. The YZF-R15 has been continuously gaining ranks in the hotly contested premium segment since its launch 3 years ago and we are sure to repeat the same feat for the new version too. With the festive season round the corner, we expect the new model to be an instant hit amongst biking enthusiasts”, he added.
Based on the “Graded Up R15” concept, the development focused on the two main areas of body styling and sporty performance, and an array of optimum features were adopted throughout the machine to make sure that customers enjoy the thrill of a refined and impressive body styling in the supersport image with the newly designed middle cowl, tail cowl, split seat, LED taillights, new exhaust pipe & silencer specs. The newly designed middle cowl features improved aerodynamic performance at higher speeds - the aerodynamic resistance value is 4% better than that of the existing YZF-R15.
The R15 version 2.0 also sports the first aluminum swing arm in the 150cc segment in the Indian market and has a truss structure that enables greater rigidity while improving handling in the turns. The new seat design enables a better feeling of seat grip in sporty riding. Also, “low front, high tail” design enables a riding posture that is well suited to both sporty riding and everyday riding around town.
The new ECU control and drivetrain unit specs ensure that riders enjoy improved off-the-line acceleration and high speed performance. The silencer protector has also been newly designed in a way that adds cadence to overall styling. It adopts a carbon-look pattern on the surface as well as a model nameplate to add to the high-performance image and the feeling of quality. To improve the feeling of clutch operation, a more rigid clutch axle shaft than the existing type has been adopted. Furthermore, the pulley that serves as a medium between the throttle wire and throttle valve has been changed to a perfect circular type to improve the linearity of the throttle action and thereby achieve better response. The wider 130mm radial rear tire and 90 mm front tire impart reduced roll resistance, high-speed cornering stability and improved handling performance. A larger 220mm diameter rear disc brake has been adopted to achieve a better balance with the new rear tire size and ensure good braking power.
Yamaha R15 version 2.0
Another interesting aspect of the bike is the mud guard and sari guard attached to the swing arm which enhances the exterior design product value. The new design of 5-spoke cast wheels achieves the necessary strength balance while creating a sense of lightness at the same time.

Handling

Yamaha Fazer is built on ‘diamond’ frame. The front type suspension is telescopic and the rear has the Swingarm type suspension. The bike also has the 7-times adjustable monocross suspension which delivers an exhilarating and stable riding experience. The suspension system of this bike is very great and it is believed that with this suspension system, Yamaha Fazer can perform too well on the rocky terrains or roads which are broken. The front have the large diameter front disc brake while at rear, the brakes are drum type. The two-pot caliper makes full use of the outer perimeter of the disc to provide strong stopping power. Further, the rear tyre of the bike is India’s first radial tyre with a 60% aspect ratio. Both the front and rear tyres of this model are tubeless type which are less susceptible to sudden flattening and thus prevents the tyre from being punctured.
These features make the braking system quite efficient and impressive. With an excellent riding position, Fazer still could be not a good option for long road trips only due to the foot pegs which are placed towards its rear. The sporty nature of the foot pegs reduces the comfort but at the same time it lends the bike great lean angles. Together with the advantages and the disadvantages, this bike is a very sporty one to ride.

Fazer being a touring bike has everything starting from looks and speed. In terms of handling also, Fazer beats Bajaj Pulsar 150. Pulsar has less speed than that of Fazer. This is due to the advanced and new engine set up by the Japanese manufacturer Yamaha. Cornering Fazer is much easier than Pulsar. Apart from the price, Fazer is certainly a better option than Bajaj Pulsar.

yamaha fzs picture

The most competitive segment of the Indian motorcycle market is the 150 cc segment and Yamaha was suffering in India with their sales in this particular segment, then they decided to launch the FZ series in the year 2008. After its launch the motorcycle was an instant hit amongst every generation of people. FZS which is an updated version of the old FZ was launched within 6 months of the launch of the FZ in the Indian market. The new model had the same engine unit of the FZ but it came with some cosmetic changes, as if Yamaha wanted to add some more stylistic elements and some more oomph!! factor in their new updated version of the FZ.
FZS is powered by a four-stroke, single-cylinder and CV-carburetor 153cc engine which generates 14bhp of maximum power at 7500rpm and 13.6 NM of torque at 6000RPM. The engine remained the same but there are few cosmetic changes in the new FZS. Let’s get to find out some more details about this new motorcycle.

Design

Yamaha FZS
The new FZS almost looks like the old FZ but there are certain changes which still can be noticeable. The headlamps have been swept back to give the FZS more aggressive look, a new small visor has been added on the front of the instrument cluster. The digital instrument cluster is the same unit from the FZ which displays the tachometer along with a speedometer, it also displays information like the fuel gauge meter beside some regular warning lamps. The disadvantage of the instrument cluster is that it can be a bit troublesome to follow while riding the motorcycle because of its small size. On the other hand the wide handlebar on the FZS is built out of a solid steel and is placed low which gives a sporty feeling to the rider. The switches on the handlebar are easy to operate and are made of good quality plastics, there is also an engine kill switch which comes in handy.
The muscular looking fuel tank and the added graphics on it makes the appearance more exclusive and attractive. The seats which was one of the major issues of the Yamaha FZ have been made longer and wider and a new rear grab handlebar also has been provided for the utmost comfort of the rider as well as the pillion, this is an important modification that Yamaha made in the new motorcycle previously lot of people complained about the seating position of the FZ and the pillion was not comfortable enough. The mono cross suspension and the midship muffler exhaust also enhances the overall look of the motorcycle. The portion which attracts everyone’s attention is the wide and chunky 140/60 R-17 tyres which is one of a kind and makes the FZS look unique.
The overall dimension of the FZS is provided below:

The FZS is powered by a four-stroke, single-cylinder and CV-carburetor 153cc engine which generates 14bhp of maximum power at 7500rpm and 13.6 NM of torque at 6000RPM. The engine is extremely smooth like other Yamaha engines; the engine has been mated with a 5 speed gearbox which is extremely smooth too like its engine. The bike has good low range torque, another mechanism which has been fitted in the engine is the TPS (Throttle position sensor) which is extremely useful and situated in its carburetor so the power delivery and the acceleration is smooth on the new FZS. The FZS has a quick acceleration and a top speed of about 110 km.
The engine details of the new FZS has been provided below:

InstallationSingle-cylinder, air-cooled

Ride and handling

Yamaha FZS
FZS has been fitted with a monocross suspension setup for its rear and 41mm front forks, the suspension system is on the stiffer side but that causes no trouble for the FZS, it handles well both in straight line as well as during corners.
The wide handlebars helps in easy maneuvering and the new wider seats helps in providing comfortable ride even during long journeys. The motorcycle handles well both in city traffics as well as highways, there is minimum vibration in high speeds and the motorcycle’s diamond frame helps in keeping the motorcycle stable in higher speeds. The 267 mm front disc brakes and rear drum brakes provide good braking power to the motorcycle. The wide rear tyre and the front MRF tyres provides enough grip on the tarmac and increases the confidence of the rider.

Competition

India has a steep competition in the 150 CC segment of motorcycles there are many products from different manufacturers that are present in the Indian market, but Yamaha’s toughest competitor is the Bajaj pulsar 150 DTSI
Bajaj Pulsar 150 DTSI
The Bajaj Pulsar 150 is one of the largest selling motorcycles in India and it has a 149.01cc engine which generates 15.06 of maximum power at 9000 (Ps @ RPM) and 12.5NM of torque at 6500 (Nm @ RPM).

Conclusion

Yamaha FZS
The FZS is a well handled motorcycle like all other Yamaha motorcycle it has the tough build quality and the overall good looks that will easily attract anyone’s attention, the muscular looking fuel tank and the wide rear tyres surely gives the motorcycle its unique identity. The motorcycle also returns a good fuel economy which also is the concern of many Indian motorcycle enthusiasts. Overall the FZS stays well ahead of its competitors in the 150 cc segment motorcycles.

Quotes

“Overall, the FZ-S feels just as comfortable on the twisty roads and straights as it does in the jungle —urban or otherwise. honda cbr 150r picture

Honda’s much anticipated sports bike CBR 250R was an instant hit amongst the Indian people specially the youngsters right after its launch in the country, to keep the CBR and the racing DNA alive, Honda launched CBR 150R in the Indian market in the year 2012. This trend of manufacturing the performance motorcycles in the 150cc segment was initiated by Yamaha way back in 2009 when they introduced the Yamaha R15 in the Indian market. Honda CBR 150R may not be the exact match of the R15 in terms of aggressiveness but then it retains the same racing genes like the bigger CBR 250R.
The new Honda CBR 150R is powered by a Liquid cooled, 4 strokes, 149.4cc engine which generates 17.5bhp of maximum power at 10500 rpm and 1.29kgm of torque at 8500rpm. The CBR150 engine surely churns out more power than the normal 150cc motorcycles that are found on the Indian streets. Beside the impressive performance and great looks the CBR 150R offers more treat for the riders.

Styling

Honda CBR 150R
The new CBR 150R looks stunning and aggressive just like its sibling the CBR 250R and the aerodynamic look is enhanced by the dual layered full body cowling, the front of the motorcycle gets dominated by the Y shaped headlamp like that of the CBR 250R. The sporty digital and analogue instrument cluster looks perfect on this motorcycle, though some may complain about the quality of switches in the switchgear which has been directly lifted from Honda Stunner and thus hampers the premium quotient of the motorcycle, the absence of pass switch and an ignition kill switch can bother many. The muscular looking fuel tank with the Honda logo and trendy graphics looks attractive. The seating position of the 150R is neither too aggressive nor too boring, if we compare the seating position of Yamaha R15 and the 150R then definitely the CBR 150R is much more comfortable and gives the rider much more hold over the motorcycle which helps in better handling which is good as this is a sports bike and you would not like to feel tiresome after a ride be it long or short. The pentagonal rear exhaust will definitely attract the attention of its onlookers and is one of the, most attractive visual features of the motorcycle. The exhaust seem to be inspired from the bigger VFR1200F and looks smaller in comparison to the overall dimension of the motorcycle while the rear tail lamps and the split rear grab bar enhances the overall visual appeal of the bike. One is bound to get swayed by the looks of Honda CBR 150R.
Fitted with 100/80-17 tyres at the front, 130/70-17 tyres at the rear, the motorcycle has sporty appeal to it and will definitely give the Yamaha R15 tough competition in the market.
The overall dimension of the motorcycle has been provided below:
OVERALL LENGTH
2000mm
OVERALL WIDTH
825mm
OVERALL HEIGHT
1120mm
WHEELBASE
1305mm
Ground clearance

Engine and performance

Honda CBR 150R
As mentioned earlier the Honda CBR 150R is powered by a new liquid-cooled 149.4cc liquid motor with a 4-valve head, the engine has been programmed with Honda’s fuel injection (PGM-FI) which has improved the overall fuel efficiency of the motorcycle and also enhanced the overall performance and power delivery of the motorcycle. The 150 cc engine generates 17.82PS of maximum power at 10500rpm which is unbelievable from a 150cc motorcycle and 12.66Nm of torque at 8500rpm. The engine is extremely and smooth and due to the huge amount of power riding, the motorcycle is also real fun to ride on. The engine has been mated with a 6 speed manual gearbox with shorter gear ratios to enhance the fun quotient of this baby CBR.
Overall the engine is smooth and responsive yet riding the motorcycle at lower revs could be a bit problematic because of the lack of torque but the performance of the engine of this motorcycle is much different than any other motorcycle of its class.

Ride and handling

Honda CBR 150R
First things first, you will be overwhelmed the seating position of this bike but it may not be as aggressive as the Yamaha R15 yet the handlebars and the comfortable seat manages to make the 150R a comfortable bike that can be ridden for long distances at a stretch without tiring your backbone. Honda’s riding dynamics have also being included in the CBR 150R, the standard Zapper Q tyres used in this bike gives you the confidence to lean the bike at corners or change directions and lanes with ease and confidence. The CBR 150R has a proper twin-spar set-up which is lightweight and also enhances the overall stability of the motorcycle on the twists and straights. The motorcycle has been fitted with Tube type telescopic forks at the front and Tube type monoshock suspension setup at the rear which provides maximum comfort to the rider while moving over potholes or bumpers. It also has a 276mm disc at the front and 220mm disc at the rear which is capable enough in bringing this motorcycle to a halt at a go.
Overall the motorcycle may not be much track friendly but it surely is a sporty motorcycle and will impress anyone with its straighline and high speed stability.

Yamaha R15 version 2.0

The Yamaha R15 version 2.0 is powered by 149.8 cc Liquid-cooled 4-stroke engine which generates 17 PS of maximum power at 8,500 RPM and 15 Nm of torque at 7,500 RPM, the engine has been mated with a 6 speed gearbox. The performance and the handling of this motorcycle will definitely give the CBR 150R some serious competition.

Conclusion

Honda CBR 150R
The Honda CBR 150R is a one of a kind motorcycle in the 150cc segment of motorcycles and also a worthy competitor to the Yamaha R15. The riding and handling of the motorcycle is impressive, the fit and finish quality of the motorcycle are also of top notch quality except the switches in the handlebars. Keeping the price point in mind some more zing could have worked wonders for the baby CBR.

Quotes

“Like the 250R, the 150R doesn’t commit fully to the enthusiast. It walks further down the path, but strays off eventually to appease the commuters. Also, a premium price tag of Rs 1.17 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi) makes pleading the CBR 150R’s case tougher still.”—Autocar India
“Following on the lines of its elder sibling the CBR250R, the youngest CBR of them all, the CBR150R is surprisingly sportier for its size and very much in tune with the iconic CBR legacy. Quick, agile and energetic, the Honda CBR150R adds a lot of chutzpah to the premium 150cc segment with its rival-beating performance credentials and gorgeous styling but loses a few brownie points for its rather high pricing”—Zigwheels India.
