TVS Motors launched their brand new 125 cc premium motorcycle Phoenix in 2012. TVS claimed that Phoenix is a premium class motorcycle because it has all the features that one can find in a premium segment motorcycle.
TVS Phoneix is powered by a 125 CC EcoThrust motor which generates 11 PS of maximum power at 8,000rpm and 10.8Nm of torque at 6,000rpm. The engine has been mated to a four-speed gearbox. TVS has already given some of their products products to Indian motorcycle market in the past. Lets get to know some more details about their new product in details.
Design
TVS Phoenix
TVS Phoenix lies in the 125 cc segment of motorcycles which means that they have to be good looking than a regular commuter motorcycle. Phoenix headlamp cluster is wide and has a all day running pilot LED lamps along with the headlamps. The instrument cluster is fully digitalis-ed and has bar graph speedometer, low battery and service due indicator lamps along with a digital fuel meter, but there is no tachometer in the motorcycle. The front of the Phoenix has resemblance to that of the TVS star city.
The fuel tank looks completely different from rest of the TVS products it has funky new graphics on the tank. The fuel tank can hold 12 litres of petrol. The seat is pretty comfortable and the wide handlebars ensures upright seating position which is ideal for city rides. The switches are placed in a proper manner but the engine kill switch is missing in the phoenix which is also necessary for this segment instead it has a hazard warning switch.
The black six spoke allow wheels has a 240mm dia petal disc in the front, and the engine is also painted in black to give it a stylish upmarket look. Overall the Phoneix has nothing extra to boast about it just looks like an other ordinary commuter motorcycle.

TVS Motors, India’s third largest two wheeler manufacturing company has showcased a new full fairing version of their flagship model Apache RTR in Indonesia. In India TVS till now has introduced the RTR 160 EFi (Fuel Injection), RTR 160 RD (Rear Disc), RTR 180 and the latest RTR 180 ABS. The manufacturer now is about to upgrade their 160cc RTR which is expected to be showcased at the Auto Expo to be held in Delhi in January 2012.
TVS Motors post their break up with Suzuki found it hard to match the other manufacturers in the market. With few motorcycles in their portfolio they could not get hold of the urban market while their competitor Bajaj was selling Pulsar in big volumes. It was only the Apache 150cc which helped TVS to make its presence in the 150cc segment. Later on TVS upgraded their 150cc Apache into a 160cc Apache RTR (Race Throttle Response) which did well with its strong pick up and racing design language.
Meanwhile, TVS has showcased a full faring model of the Apache in Indonesia and the bike when launched in India will compete with the Yamaha R15. The full fairing gives the bike a sporty look which only the Yamaha R15 offers in this segment. There are thicker tyres and better braking. Though there is no news about the engine capacity or the power output but if this bike comes to India it will surely create ripples in the market.

Press Release

Royal Enfield Thunderbird
Highway cruising gets a new definition with the launch of the Royal Enfield Thunderbird 500 today. Perhaps one of the most anticipated models from the Royal Enfield stable, Thunderbird 500 is poised to enhance the pleasure of leisure motorcycling amongst the touring enthusiasts. Combining distinctive “black” styling with a powerful 500cc Unit Construction Engine and a 27.2 bhp power output being fed through an electronic fuel injection system - the Thunderbird 500 makes a distinct statement on the Indian roads.
Launching the Thunderbird 500 at the 2012 Auto Expo, Mr Siddhartha Lal, MD & CEO Eicher Motors Ltd. said, “When we launched Thunderbird in 2002, it was a one-of-its kind model on the Indian roads that redefined the cruiser segment. With the long running success of Thunderbird 350, the Thunderbird brand has built its own cult following amongst the Royal Enfield customers, as a comfortable touring motorcycle. Today, with the launch of the Thunderbird 500, fitted with the UCE and a host of design enhancements, Royal Enfield has again upped the ante in leisure motor cycling which we have been pioneering for over half a century in India. With touring enthusiasts forming the core of our customer base, the Thunderbird 500 gives them more power, comfort and style for long - distance riding.”
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Venki Padmanabhan, CEO, Royal Enfield said, “Royal Enfield has set its sights firmly on delivering traditionally progressiv e motorcycles around the world- motorcycles that are practical; motorcycles that beg you to ride into a life of leisure. At this 11th Auto Expo in Delhi, we eagerly share the Thunderbird 500 with our customers , looking for the expression of delight. We listened very closely to the needs of highway cruisers in India and covered improvements on a variety of fronts – range, ergonomics, looks, braking, night riding visibility, luggage carriage capability, even clothing and accessories. We hope also that our customers will see this as a firm affirmation of the fact that Royal Enfield is a company bent on listening, imagining and delivering. We invite everyone coming to Pragati Maidan this January to visit us and experience the oldest motorcycle company in the world.”
The visual appeal of the Thunderbird 500 is marked by the ‘black’ engine, the first of the several styling elements that characterize the motorcycle. The seat has been completely redesigned to suit the new foot pegs position. It now opens using a lock mechanism, accessible through the side panel. True to its design concept as a more “touring friendly” motorcycle, the separately mounted pillion seat can be removed to accommodate luggage. The handle bar too has received changes for better reach and ergonomics. The pillion grab rail is an all new pressure die cast component and lends to the modern design of the motorcycle. Bungee hooks provide the much needed bungee points to tie
luggage. Other small styling elements that a keen enthusiast will notice include the Royal Enfield logo on the all new foot-pegs, new design mirrors and the LED tail lamp.
The redesigned front end with its 41mm thick forks greatly improves handling besides adding to the muscularity of the Thunderbird 500. The instrumentation also includes two digital trip meters, allowing riders to keep a track of total trip mileage as well as i ntermediate mileage between tankfulls. The speed and engine rpm are shown via tastefully designed analogue clocks, housed in all new twin pods at the front. The main ignition lock also functions as a central steering lock. The inclusion of hazard lamps in the switch gear is a first for a motorcycle manufactured in India.
The new headlight with a 55W projector lamp for its low beam and a 55W halogen bulb for the high beam, addresses the biggest challenge of night time visibility faced by most motorcyclists while cruising on the highway. The lighting is at its brightest with the high beam on, working in combination with the projector lamp giving ample spread and penetration on the road. The high rise handlebars, forward placed foot-pegs and a low seat height enable a rider to cover distances comfortably for longer periods of time. Add to this, the large 20L fuel tank that does away with the need to stop frequently for fuel- highway cruising will no longer be the same! The tank cap is placed asymmetrically on the top right hand side of the tank, instead of the conventional central mounting; another distinctive styling element of the Thunderbird 500.
To complete the package, s topping power has been aided with the addition of a disc brake at the rear. The braking system is supplied by Bybre, a fully owned subsidiary of Brembo. It is mounted on the new improved oval section swing arm.
Royal Enfield also previewed a range of well crafted, meticulously detailed, purpose built motorcycle gear at the Auto Expo. Designed and developed indigenously, the Royal Enfield accessories both add flair and enhance the riding experience. On display is the inaugural “BLACK” range of merchandise, celebrating the launch of the Thunderbird 500 . The collection includes biker apparel, bike and riding accessories.
The highlights include flagship leather riding jackets with design details that take into account not just the rider’s comfort but also safety with CE approved impact absorption protectors that pass the stringent European norms of EN1621. In addition, there is ample usage of 3M Scotchlite reflective piping and branding at the back with Schoeller reflective for high visibility during night rides . The all weather high density nylon riding jacket wi th breathable and waterproof membrane provides rain proofing, while the removable thermal lining takes care of cold weather riding and nylon mesh on the outer shell keeps the rider cool during summer rides. The side profile of the motorcycle is also equally attractive like its front, The fuel tank look stylish with the thigh pad placed in the tank adds to the vintage look of the motorcycle, the single saddle on the motorcycle has been fitted with stiffer springs for the maximum comfort of the rider. The exhaust looks classy on the new Desert Storm and helps in maintaining the old charm on the motorcycle.

Royal Enfield Classic Desert Storm
The engine that powers the Desert storm is the same unit that powers the Thunderbird 500. The Desert storm is powered by a Single-cylinder, air-cooled, four-stroke, 499cc engine which generates 27.2bhp of maximum power at 5250rpm and 4.2kgm of torque at 4000rpm. There is an electric start for the motorcycle, the sound is the same old thump that is recognizable from a long distance.
The engine is pretty smooth and is ideal for cruising; this motorcycle is a cruiser so there is no meaning of pushing the motorcycle hard to extract the best performance out of it. The gear pattern for the Desert storm is one-down, four-up and the gears are pretty smooth and requires less effort for shifting, the Desert storm can be ridden at high speeds and the high speed stability is excellent in the motorcycle and the engine also does not feels stressed out. But when it is pushed hard there is lot of vibration that can be felt from the handlebars.
Overall the engine performance is descent and there is enough power with the twist of a throttle which will leave a smile on the face of the rider.

Ride and handling

Royal Enfield Classic Desert Storm
The Desert Storm has been built around a single-downtube, heavy tubular steel frame and weighs about 187kg, the massive weight of the motorcycle can be a bit of a problem for the riders when they will be riding in the city traffic, but once it finds the open road the beast can be tamed easily. The rider seating position is upright and is not at all stressful for long journeys the sprung seats is an innovative idea by Royal Enfield. The Telescopic, 35mm forks, 130mm travel front forks and the twin gas charged shock absorbers with 5-step adjustable preload, 80mm travel suspension at the rear works wonders for the Desert Storm and they handle the Indian roads and rough terrains quite efficiently.

Competition

There is no such competitor for the Royal Enfield in this segment; the iconic motorcycle brand faces little competition from the Thunderbird 500 which is also another motorcycle from their stable. The Thunderbird 500 is a modern avatar of the Royal Enfield and has many new design features and elements which will definitely attract lots of attention towards the motorcycle, but if someone wants a unique old school designed motorcycle then the Desert storm is the ideal motorcycle for them.

Conclusion

Royal Enfield Classic Desert Storm
Keeping in mind the customers and their needs Royal Enfield has improved all their products with passing time. The desert Storm is a reliable motorcycle but there are certain things that comes in the way of Desert storm being called the perfect machine on the Indian road today, the chrome metal parts rusts easily so the question still arises about the fit and finish quality of the motorcycle, the engine vibration is another issue when the motorcycle is pushed hard. Beside these the retro look and the thumping noise will definitely attract lots of attention towards this motorcycle for sure.

It won’t be long before this veteran motorcycle maker will have to face serious threats from able cruiser rivals, as enemy number one — Harley-Davidson — is already preparing to launch in India”.—Autocar India
